Revolutionizing Poultry Farming: The Advantage of ABIS’s Environment-Controlled Poultry Sheds
Author : Anant Kumar Yadav

Poultry farming is a significant sector of the Indian agriculture industry, contributing substantially to the nation's food security and economic growth. The Indian poultry industry is witnessing rapid growth, driven by rising demand for eggs and chicken meat due to increasing urbanization, growing disposable incomes, and changing dietary preferences. India is the third-largest egg producer and the fifth-largest producer of chicken meat globally. Production is expected to reach 220 million tonnes by 2025. Poultry farming exists in various forms, from small-scale backyard operations to large-scale commercial farms. With less than 5% large scale production, the industry faces challenges like biosecurity risks, fluctuating stock supply, and inadequate infrastructure and technical support. Adoption of automation, biosecurity measures, and improved rearing environment has huge potential in fostering sustainable growth.

The ABIS Exports (I) Private Limited has laid down a stepping stone in the transformation of poultry industry in the country. With second largest market share in Indian poultry, ABIS has committed to uplift the marginal poultry farmers with its flagship programs ‘Parivartan’ and ‘Parivartan GENNXT’. With their sustainable benefit, it is crafting entrepreneurial path for poultry farmers and young Indians. ABIS supports by investing 25% of the total expense in procuring EC infrastructure and provides technical supports for end-to-end in this entrepreneurial venture. This assurance from ABIS is not only attracting farmers but also strengthening them in resilient business.

Apart from economic benefits of these modern sheds, they are sustainable to run and has huge environmental benefits. These cutting-edge facilities are designed to provide optimal living conditions for poultry, ensuring their well-being while simultaneously addressing environmental concerns and promoting sustainability.

Poultry farming is highly energy demanding and thus shares a major portion (8%) in global GHG emission. The sustainable aspects of ABIS’s environment-controlled poultry sheds and the revolutionizing way they raise the poultry in stress free environment is the need of future. The ABIS’s EC sheds are equipped with advanced technologies that enable precise control of temperature, humidity, and ventilation. By optimizing these environmental factors, farmers can significantly reduce energy consumption and minimizing the environmental footprint associated with traditional poultry farming methods.

With a bird density of 1.5 Birds/sq.ft, ABIS EC sheds can saves 4000 kWh/month of electricity with its advanced insulation and enclosure as compared to open house farm.

The design of the ABIS EC shed is along the East-West direction and the south facing rooftop of the Parivartan farm is suitable for the installation of solar panels. With the direct solar exposed area of 7000 sq.ft, the ABIS EC shed are capable of generating 170 MWh of clean energy annually which can be utilized in day to day farm operations. This will result in a decreased load on the national grid and contribute in GHGs emission reduction. The solar energy from ABIS EC shed will reduce 160 tCO2e/annually.

A nipple drinking system results in a 20% reduction in water consumption in poultry farms. Nipple drinkers generally result in the least water spillage, and hence they are less likely to contribute to manure becoming wet. The dry litter of the farm will prolong the decomposition time of litter and reduces the producing ammonia.

Poultry litter is major waste in poultry farms. The traditional practice of poultry farming produces wet manure from the farm which leads to a higher level of ammonia and methane generation. Poor waste management in traditional farms generates more environmental pollutants. The ABIS EC shed with its highly automated integrated system continuously maintain the dry condition for chicken litter. The dry litter results in reduced degradation of chicken manure, methane and ammonia generation as compared to open farms.

The integration of precision farming techniques and data analytics in environment-controlled poultry sheds allows farmers to monitor and optimize various parameters. This data-driven approach enables farmers to make informed decisions, leading to increased efficiency in resource utilization, reduced waste, and overall improved sustainability.

Environment-controlled poultry sheds represent a significant leap forward in sustainable poultry farming practices. By embracing these modern facilities, farmers can achieve high economic growth, reduce environmental impact, and enhance the overall well-being of the poultry. As the demand for poultry products continues to rise, it is crucial to adopt innovative and sustainable solutions that prioritize both the environment and animal welfare. The era of environment-controlled poultry farming is here, and ABIS EC sheds holds the promise of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for the poultry industry.
